Sorry, this is gonna get rwde.
One of the things I hate most is when people claim they could write RWBY better than the actual writers.
As a writer myself I know how much harder it is to come up with an original idea and make it work than fixing something someone else made or using an universe someome else has created and writing fanfiction. It’s so much harder to come up with an universe that actually makes sense than diving into something that already exists. It’s so much harder to have an empty canvas and to come up with everything yourself than already having lines to orientate yourself. Many seem to underestimate that.
Also many seem to underestimate what a nightmare RWBY is to write. Screenwriting is very different from writing stories. You have to take limited screentime and resources into account, especially with the limited resources Rooster Teeth has in comparison to bigger studios. Fight scenes are way more complicated to animate than scenes where people just talk.
RWBY is also a nightmare to pace. Seriously. Even the pacing of a trilogy can be a challenge. But with RWBY you have to pace the series as a whole, the different arcs that last longer than one Volume, the Volumes in itself, the separate episodes and the separate scenes within an episode at the same time. All that makes writing RWBY way harder than many seem to expect.
It’s a personal pet peeve of mine to be honest. I have grown to seriously dislike arrogant writers. Writers who thought they didn’t need improvement. Writers who thought they were the next big thing in the business and refused to see how much more work they needed to become really good. Writers who lacked any respect for this craft and how much work it is to become really good.
I’m not saying people who say that are bad writers. I’m sure most of them aren’t. I’m not saying RWBY is flawless. I’m not saying you can’t come up with ideas that would indeed improve the show. But saying that if you were the one to write for this show it would be better is nothing but arrogant and stupid because no, you probably couldn’t. Watching RWBY and then coming up with an idea how to improve it doesn’t mean that you could create a better show than the one we see right now. I couldn’t write a project this big. I have struggled with smaller projects and I have no shame admitting that because even though I am a good writer I still always try to improve and to learn and I know my limits.
